My video partner, Bill Stromberg, is editing the video I shot so I can offer it as a companion piece to the "booklet."The working title is "South By Southwest." The younger crowd won't get it, but that okay. The trip is designed to give younger folks (children and grandchildren) an experience they'll…See More

Monday's Blog 'em for Sept. 21, 2009

OCEANSIDE -- Made it back home in time to see the Chargers blow their game against the Baltimore Ravens. The trip was good. My blogs weren't intermittent because the site was having problems. Made it all the way up to Monument Valley on the Utah border, back through Flagstaff and down Arizona 89-A and the Oak Creek Canyon.Ol' Abe (my '97 Lincoln Town Car) performed beautifully getting an average of 21.3 mpg. And, to think it was destined to be a "clunker" before I rescued it.More on…See More

HOLBROOK -- Spent the night on Monday in Safford after touring the Chiricahua National Monument, one of the most spectacular rock formations anywhere.

The Chiricahua Apaches called them "Standing Up Rocks." These magnificent spires were formed more than 27 million years ago when the Turkey Creek Volcano erupted, spewing lava and ash over a 1,200 square-mile area. Those super-heated ash particles melted together, forming layers of gray rock called "rhyolite." Millions of years of weathering… Continue

When I say “around,” I literally mean “in a circle.” So far, I’ve come to the Grand Canyon State via Interstate 8, then south to Tucson and Benson on I-10. I’m now on state Highway 80, which took me south of Benson, through Tombstone, Bisbee and now, Douglas. Before I finish up in Phoenix, I’ll have gone north along U.S. 191 to the Four-Corners then back west through Monument Valley, then south to Flagstaff and… Continue
